What to Do If You Fail a DOT Drug or Alcohol Test?

Failing a DOT drug or alcohol test can be a stressful and career-threatening event. However, employees have a structured path to regain their employment.

Immediate Steps to Take:

  1. Do Not Panic – A failed test does not mean the end of your career. The DOT has a process in place for employees to regain compliance.
  2. Find a DOT-Qualified SAP – You must select a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) from a DOT-approved provider list.
  3. Complete the SAP Assessment – Your SAP will evaluate your substance use history and determine the necessary treatment or education.
  4. Follow the Treatment/Education Plan – Completing the SAP’s recommended program is mandatory before returning to work.
  5. Pass the Return-to-Duty Test – Once the SAP clears you, you must take and pass a DOT drug/alcohol test.
  6. Complete Follow-up Testing – The SAP will assign a random follow-up testing schedule for up to five years.

Employees who refuse or fail to follow these steps will not be allowed to resume safety-sensitive duties under DOT regulations.
