A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) plays a critical role in helping employees return to DOT-covered jobs after a failed or refused drug/alcohol test.
Responsibilities of a SAP:
- Evaluate employees who violate DOT drug/alcohol regulations.
- Determine appropriate treatment or education requirements based on individual needs.
- Ensure compliance with the recommended treatment plan.
- Conduct follow-up evaluations before clearing the employee for a return-to-duty test.
- Establish a follow-up testing schedule for ongoing monitoring.
A SAP is not an advocate for the employer or employee but serves as a neutral and qualified evaluator to ensure workplace safety.
